Kashif Khokhar, P.ENG
Qualification Summary
Transformer Engineer with proven experience in complete electrical design of various types of large power transformers across multiple voltage classes and MVA ratings, including reconnectable winding configurations, de-energized tap changers (DETC), on-load tap changers (LTC), and a wide range of vector group arrangements.
Transformer Subject Matter Expert at Manitoba Hydro working in both HVAC and HVDC Transformers.
Design Qualifications
Performed advanced electrical and electromagnetic analysis as part of complete transformer design, including study of transient overvoltage, electric and magnetic field distributions, and short-circuit performance in large power transformers; authored 50+ formal engineering reports supporting design validation, insulation coordination, and compliance with IEEE and CSA standards.
Design & Manufacturing Execution Experience
Prepared complete electrical design documentation during the transformer design phase, including electrical datasheets, test instruction summaries, special test summaries, winding specifications, core datasheets, clearance charts, and manufacturing nameplates.
Supported transformer designs throughout the full manufacturing lifecycle, working closely with manufacturing teams to address and resolve design- and production-related issues.
Performed and supported 50+ winding inspections, core stacking and nesting inspections, pre–vapour phase inspections, and tanking inspections to verify compliance with design intent and customer specifications.
Participated in and supported 50+ Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs), including test witnessing, design clarification, issue resolution, and review of test results against applicable IEEE and CSA standards.
Review & Oversight Experience
Performed independent technical review of transformer electrical design datasheets, including winding configurations, insulation coordination, tap changer arrangements, vector group selection, and compliance with customer specifications and applicable IEEE and CSA standards.
Attended and performed pre-tanking inspections of transformer active parts, including verification of electrical clearances, winding and lead arrangement, blocking and bracing integrity, cable routing and termination, and identification of loose or non-conforming components prior to tanking.
Witnessed and reviewed Factory Acceptance Tests (FATs) supported investigation and resolution of testing issues and recommended non-acceptance of transformers where FAT results did not comply with approved design, specifications, or IEEE standards.
